Department of History of Countries of Asia and Africa

The department was founded in 2014.

The history of the department is associated with the names of well-known scholars who, through their fruitful work, contributed to the development of Ukrainian historical science. Among them are Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor, Turkologist Igor Fedorovych Chernikov - founder of the academic institutions department of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, doctor of historical sciences, professor, diplomat, sineologist Leonid Avdiyovych Leshchenko, doctor of historical sciences, professor, Africanist Victor Gura and other well-known experts in the field of oriental studies research and African Studies.

Areas of research of the department:

- History of Asia and Africa in the context of global development;

- historical, cultural and civilizational development of the countries of Asia and Africa;

- history of socio-economic and cultural relations of Ukraine with the countries of Asia and Africa, analysis and forecasting of development of these relations;

- the place of Asia and Africa in world-system transformations in the context of global development;

- civilizational shifts and competing versions of the progress of modernity at the stage of globalization and regionalization.

The Department is engaged in research on the problems of historical development and transformational transformations originating from the powerful peripheral regions of Asia and Africa; revealing the significance of the civilization factor in this process; the definition of the laws of the rise of new centers and formats of integration in the African-Asian space as a component of world historical development.

The topics of the GDR for 2017 - 2019 are:

"Integration Processes in Asian and African Regional Systems in the 21st Century."

Oliynyk Oleg Mykolayovych, born 1967. PhD in Economics. Senior Research Fellow. Specialty: historian, synologist, economist-internationalist. Sphere of scientific interests: world history, world economy and international relations. He is studying China's historical, political and economic development in the following areas: China in the Asian Age: geopolitical dimension, global economic strategy, regional priorities; comparative analysis of the parameters of foreign policy of the United States and China in the post-bipolar era: principles, goals, achievements; China's foreign-economic and monetary policy in the context of the transformation of the world financial system and prospects of economic and financial cooperation between Ukraine and China.
Natalia Mkhitaryan, born in 1963. Senior Research Fellow. Candidate of Political Science, Senior Researcher. Specialty: Political scientist, Turkologist, Specialist in Political Problems of International Systems and Global Development. Sphere of scientific interests: international political science - processes of internal and foreign political relations of the Turkish Republic, the countries of Central Asia, relations of these countries with Ukraine.
SHVED Vyacheslav Olexandrovych, born in 1950. Head of the Department of History of Asia and Africa. Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor. Specialty: historian, Arabist, Orientalist. Sphere of scientific interests: civilization aspects of modern transformations in the Arab-Islamic world, geopolitical aspects of international relations in the Middle East, political Islam in the context of modern Arab revolutions.
Aulin Olexander Anatoliyovych, born in 1967. Senior Research Fellow. Candidate of Philosophy. President of the public organization "Ukrainian Center of Islamic Studies". Specialty: Islamic scholar. Sphere of scientific interests: socio-political processes in the countries of the Islamic world.
Prorochenko Natalia Oleksandrivna, born in 1970. Senior Research Fellow. Candidate of Historical Sciences, Senior Researcher, Associate Professor. Specialty: historian, philosopher. Sphere of scientific interests: socio-political processes in the countries of the Near and Middle East, sociocultural specificity and peculiarities of the social transformation of Arab-Muslim societies in the context of globalization processes of the present, political Islam and its place in the modern world.
Lukash Olga Ivanivna, born in 1952. Senior Research Fellow. Candidate of Historical Sciences, Senior Research Fellow. Specialty: historian, indologist, orientalist. Sphere of scientific interests: modern development of India, its international relations, regional policy of the country, its specificity in South Asia; the history of India's international relations with the leading countries of the world, especially with China, the USA, the countries of the PSA; the history of Ukrainian-Indian relations; development of indology in Ukraine.
Gutsalo Serhiy Yevgenovych, born in 1963. Senior Research Fellow. Candidate of Historical Sciences, Senior Research Fellow. Specialty: historian, Arabist. Sphere of scientific interests: inter-Arab integration. Conflicts in history and the present inter-Arab relations. Gorodnya Natalya Danylivna, born in 1967. Senior Research Fellow. Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor. Specialty: historian, Orientalist, Americanist. Sphere of scientific interests: international relations and foreign policy of the USA, especially the East Asian policy of the USA, regional processes in "big east Asia", Ukraine in international processes and world politics.
